Home Remedy for Canker Sores

January 3rd, 2008 · No Comments · Home Remedies

Sad to inform all you sufferers of the very common minor aphthous ulcer - better known as the canker sore - that there is in fact no known permanent cure for these sores on the inside of the mouth. Luckily though there are plenty of home remedies that can help lessen the pain. Here are a few to try:

Yogurt - The lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria present in Yogurt may be a preventive of cankers. When you buy yogurt, look for “active cultures” printed somewhere on the label. Eat yogurt daily especially while under stress.

Speaking of stress, this can set off a return of your sores, so try to keep the stress levels down to a minimum. Herbs which work as sedatives such as rockrose and chickweed may in turn help keep stress at bay and mouth sores away.

Stick a wet tea bag in your mouth. Tannins present in black tea are thought to help remedy sores. Make sure the bag isn’t burning hot though!

Swish with a spoonful of hyrdrogen peroxide in a cup of water.

Swish a liquid antacid around in your mouth.

Use a tea made with goldenseal as a mouthwash.

Take your vitamins - a vitamin deficiency can lead to an outbreak of cankers. A popular home remedy for canker sores is to rub the liquid from vitamin E tabs on the sores.

Prevention: Don’t brush your teeth too hard and don’t chew on your cheeks while you are concentrating on your work.

If any home remedy for canker sores doesn’t work, keep in mind that most outbreaks of these things will go away after a couple of weeks on their own. If this doesn’t happen, please see your health care provider.
